Local Host Recommendations for CSS 2023 Attendees

July in Texas will be HOT!  So, for your own comfort and safety, we’d recommend:

  • Light, loose clothing
  • Hats, head-coverings
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen, lip balm
  • A water-bottle (keep it filled and stay hydrated!)
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
  • Handkerchief or bandana
  • Aloe vera or soy moisturizer, hydrocortisone cream, ibuprofen/aspirin/etc.
  • Be aware of the symptoms & treatment for heat exhaustion and sunburn.
  1. Recycled Books & Records (on the Square–a landmark and a sponsor!)
  2. Paschall Bar (my favorite speakeasy on the Square; one warning: upstairs, not easily accessible)
  3. Miss Angeline’s House of Fine Taste (cool cocktail lounge with indoor/outdoor accessible seating)
  4. More Fun Comics & Games (busy comic shop on the Square)
  5. LSA Burger (Texas music-themed, try the rooftop patio!)
  6. Ambro’s Tacos y Mas (trust me, go try their tacos or gorditas, then head to Denton Brewing Co. or…)
  7. M&B Tiny Shop (Mexican/Guatemalan artisan gifts—near the Square, behind Ambro’s Tacos)
  8. Golden Boy Coffee (near Elm & University; locally-sourced, queer-friendly coffee-shop, wine & beer, and a tattoo parlor!)
  9. Alamo Drafthouse Denton (movie theater and drafthouse; near University and I-35)
  10. Bewitched (crystals & metaphysical gifts, tarot, magic, etc.; neighborhood north of campus)
  1. Chairy Orchard (a strange, whimsical installation featuring chairs and more puns than you can shake a stick at)
  2. Buc-ee’s (near the hotels—a gas station the size of a football stadium that really must been seen to be believed)
  3. Recycled Books & Records (on the Square—a space the size of a city block, and chock full of amazing stuff)
  4. free play (on the Square: come for arcade games, stay for beer!)
  5. Atomic Candy (on the Square: unusual, old-fashioned, and nostalgic treats)
  6. Beth Marie’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream and Soda Fountain (on the Square: it’s going to be ridiculously hot, so you might as well grab a cone of homemade ice cream on your way to a panel!)
  7. UNT CoLab (a makerspace on the Square, gallery, and boutique featuring work made by UNT students and alumni)
  8. Austin Street Truck Stop (a park off the Square featuring drinks, outdoor seating, a ton of different food trucks, and music)
  9. Barley and Board (on the Square: a beautiful indoor space with great cocktails and fancyish food)
  10. Denton Water Works Park (did I mention it’s gonna be hot?: a municipal water park featuring a lazy river, wave pool, and slides)

Comic & Book Shops

On or Near Campus:

  • The Taste (Korean)—a block from the Gateway Center
  • Tres Aguilas Taqueria (Burritos)—next door to The Taste, inside the convenience store. Try it–trust me on this!

Hickory/Ave A (other side of campus, but still walkable, 15-20 mins):

On/Near the Square

We would recommend the Square for dinner or any free time you have to explore!
