
Local Host Recommendations for CSS 2023 Attendees
July in Texas will be HOT! So, for your own comfort and safety, we’d recommend:
- Light, loose clothing
- Hats, head-coverings
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen, lip balm
- A water-bottle (keep it filled and stay hydrated!)
- Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
- Handkerchief or bandana
- Aloe vera or soy moisturizer, hydrocortisone cream, ibuprofen/aspirin/etc.
- Be aware of the symptoms & treatment for heat exhaustion and sunburn.

- Paschall Bar (my favorite speakeasy on the Square; one warning: upstairs, not easily accessible)

- Alamo Drafthouse Denton (movie theater and drafthouse; near University and I-35)
- Bewitched (crystals & metaphysical gifts, tarot, magic, etc.; neighborhood north of campus)
- Chairy Orchard (a strange, whimsical installation featuring chairs and more puns than you can shake a stick at)
- Buc-ee’s (near the hotels—a gas station the size of a football stadium that really must been seen to be believed)
- Recycled Books & Records (on the Square—a space the size of a city block, and chock full of amazing stuff)

- Atomic Candy (on the Square: unusual, old-fashioned, and nostalgic treats)
- Beth Marie’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream and Soda Fountain (on the Square: it’s going to be ridiculously hot, so you might as well grab a cone of homemade ice cream on your way to a panel!)
- UNT CoLab (a makerspace on the Square, gallery, and boutique featuring work made by UNT students and alumni)
- Austin Street Truck Stop (a park off the Square featuring drinks, outdoor seating, a ton of different food trucks, and music)
- Barley and Board (on the Square: a beautiful indoor space with great cocktails and fancyish food)
- Denton Water Works Park (did I mention it’s gonna be hot?: a municipal water park featuring a lazy river, wave pool, and slides)
