Travel Award Application

CSS Travel Awards

The Comics Studies Society (CSS) is pleased to offer support to graduate students and contingent faculty to cover a portion of the costs for presenting their work at our fifth annual conference, to take place from July 28th – 30th at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Information for each award is below.

Applicants should complete the application form below before midnight CST on April 30, 2022.

Recipients of the travel grants will be notified by email from the conference account by May 15th and acknowledged at the Conference Reception.

The Tilley Travel Awards are named after past CSS President Carol Tilley, who made the creation of travel awards for graduate students and contingent faculty both a goal and a reality for CSS during her tenure on the Executive Board. Thanks to Carol’s leadership, CSS first offered travel awards for graduate and contingent faculty at the second annual CSS conference held at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. We are proud to continue this tradition and pledge to carry it into the future, as well.

Graduate Students (3 awards): free registration and $150 (US) towards conference expenses.

Contingent Faculty (3 awards): free registration and $150 (US) towards conference expenses.

On February 24th, 2019, women took advantage of Twitter as an intersectional feminist space and addressed gender inequality in comics studies using #womenonpanels. Women from around the world shared short descriptions of their work and recognized other women who inspired them by tweeting with the hashtag. The #womenonpanels initiative builds on this social media origin, asking everyone in comics studies, but especially those editing collections or putting together conference panels, to “read, cite, and invite” women and people of marginalized gender identities. For more on #womeonpanels read Leah Misemer’s blog post, “Taking Twitter Higher, Further, Faster: Leading the #Womenonpanels Event” at TECHStyle.

Graduate and/or Contingent Faculty (3 awards): free registration and $150 (US) towards conference expenses.

Sales from the CSS #womenonpanels merchandise, which can be found here, will continue to go toward travel awards for female-identified or non-binary emerging scholars (graduate student or contingent faculty) to present original research at the Comics Studies Society 2022 Conference.  Please consider generously supporting this award with your purchases.
